System Requirements

  • Check the current Mac download for the operating-system and processor requirements of that release.
  • Microphone access
App installation and local-model support are separate requirements. A model may require newer hardware or software than the app itself. For example, Utter’s Apple Intelligence integration requires macOS 26 or iOS 26 and compatible hardware. See offline setup before choosing a device-specific workflow.

Download the DMG

Download Utter from utter.to.

Open the DMG

Double-click the downloaded Utter.dmg file.

Drag to Applications

Drag the Utter app to your Applications folder.

Launch Utter

Open Utter from Applications or Spotlight.
What to expect: Utter opens and asks for microphone permission on first launch.

Required Permissions

After launching Utter for the first time, you’ll need to grant these permissions:
System Settings > Privacy & Security > MicrophoneRequired to capture your voice for transcription.
System Settings > Privacy & Security > AccessibilityRequired to automatically insert transcribed text into applications. Without this, you can still copy to clipboard.
If that did not work: If text is transcribed but not inserted into apps, restart Utter after enabling Accessibility.

Setup

Search for “Utter” or use the link above.

Open the App

Launch Utter after installation.

Complete Onboarding

Follow the in-app onboarding flow. It handles setup for you, including microphone access.

Start Dictating

Tap the record button to begin.
What to expect: Your speech appears as text in the app after each recording.

Updating Utter

Utter automatically checks for updates. When an update is available:

Open Update Check

Click the update notification, or go to Utter > Check for Updates.

Download Update

Click Download Update.

Restart Utter

Restart Utter when prompted.
What to expect: After restart, the new version is active.

iOS

Updates are delivered through the App Store:

Open App Store

Open the App Store.

Check Updates

Open your profile and check for updates.

Update Utter

Tap Update next to Utter.
What to expect: The App Store shows Utter as up to date.

Check Your Installation

Make a short recording in Utter before testing a keyboard shortcut or automation. On Mac, confirm the app is running from Applications, not the mounted DMG. On iPhone, open the app and finish onboarding before using a Shortcut. If recording works but text is not inserted on Mac, check Accessibility permission. If the app or a model is unavailable on your device, check the current download requirements rather than bypassing a system compatibility warning.
